VIOLENCE

Domestic violence was something that happened to other people until 7 pm last Thursday night, when it happened to me. I was, I suppose, the victim: although what happened didn’t make me feel like a victim. All the same, I was physically abused. My hair was pulled, my glasses were torn off my face, and my leg was bruised.

But the aggressor wasn’t my partner: he wasn’t even in the house at the time. It was my daughter, aged 15, who lashed out at me, kicking and screaming, as we locked horns over her request to go out that evening.

Funnily enough, when I think back over a decade-and-a-half of child-rearing, I can see that the hour or so after the children’s tea has always been the hot spot in our family for major battles. When my three children were tiny, I remember how stressful the period leading up to bath time always was, with the children going a bit stir-crazy after the sugar rush of teatime; these days it is the moment when rows over homework and television viewing tend to erupt. And so it was last Thursday, when my 15-year-old, Emily, careered straight out of tea into a major showdown with her younger brother, Freddie, eight.

Disinvestment Theory.

Disinvestment is back. Policy-makers believe that there is no reason to oppose it, since at least 51 per cent of the equity holding in the public sector enterprises (PSEs) would continue to remain with the government, which would retain their managerial control. However, this calls for revisiting the arguments for disinvestment, and asking whether the PSEs’ recent performance calls for a sale of public sector equity.

Dilution of public ownership is meant to bring down the fiscal deficit, thus potentially reducing the adverse inflation and balance of payment effects. Growing fiscal deficit could also lead to downgrading of the nation’s credit rating, raising the cost of international borrowing. Disinvestment is also expected to impart stock market-based discipline on enterprises’ performance, and reducing their losses.

Such reasoning assumes that the economy is currently in “full employment,” that is, any additional deficit would only translate into higher inflation, additional imports and deterioration in the external balance. But what if there are large underutilised resources, as in a labour surplus economy like ours with 56 per cent of the labour force still subsisting on agriculture? If deficits are productively used, they could yield additional output; hence the ratio of the fiscal deficit to GDP may not rise. So, in principle, what matters is not the deficit per se, but what is done with it.

Rainbow Group-Life Insurance

Rainbow Group is offering many kind of financial products and services. One of the product that you can try to get from them is Life Insurance. I know that in most countries, you need to have this kind of insurance. And if you don't know where to buy those life insurance products, just visit the website from them. You will find some kind of tools to search or check about the amount of money that you have to pay them in order to get their life insurance product. This tool is called Life Insurance Quotes.

If you are living in UK, I think it's about time to check what does the company have on their website. Please remember that Rainbow Group is located in UK, so they are using their own currency when you try to check the quotes of your life insurances. The good thing about this company is that you can also apply your insurance online through their website.

So far, this is the easiest way that I ever see if we want to get our life insurances. Normally, we need to go to the insurance company office and then let them give us the breakdown of the quotes for the insurance that we want to buy. Now, we don't have to do it anymore if we get the insurance from the company that I mentioned above.

Rational Policy

A recent judgment of the Bombay High Court upholding the plea of Anil Ambani’s Reliance Natural Resources Ltd. (RNRL) against Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) for the supply of gas from the Krishna-Godavari basin brings into focus the major lacunae in the official policy on natural gas. The court has asked RIL to supply 28 mmscmd (million metric standard cubic metres per day) of gas at the agreed price of $2.34 per mmbtu (million metric British th ermal units) for 17 years and not at the $4.20, the price claimed by RIL and approved by an empowered group of ministers as the floor price in 2007. Although the court has left room for an out-of-court settlement, there could well be protracted litigation, if all remedies fail. RIL, especially, has a great deal to lose: a case filed by the NTPC asking RIL to supply gas at the tendered price of $2.34 per mmbtu is still to be decided. The significance of the judgment goes far beyond the commercial interests of any one company. The public policy on pricing and utilisation of natural gas has been ad hoc and opaque. The government did not follow international practices which involve one of the following: an open bidding process, a cost-plus method, or an indexation of oil prices. Instead it made a hash of price discovery of natural gas by combining all the three methods, resulting in the final price of $4.20.

TOXIC TOXIC

Claudia Albino, a washerwoman who earns about $3 a day and lives in a one-room hovel with her family in this bleak town of La Oroya in the Andes, might seem at first to have nothing to do with Ira Rennert, the reclusive New York billionaire who built one of the largest homes in the United States, an Italianate mansion sprawling over more than 66,000 square feet in the Hamptons.

But Rennert’s privately held industrial empire includes the smelter with a towering smokestack that overlooks Albino’s home, so the health and economic fate of her and thousands of others here rest on the corporate manoeuvres he is carrying out.

La Oroya has been called one of the world’s 10 most polluted places by the Blacksmith Institute, a non-profit group that studies toxic sites. But for several months, the Peruvian smelting company in Rennert’s empire has claimed that low metals prices prevented it from completing a timely cleanup to lower the emissions that have given this town such an ignoble distinction.
